“Changing Reflections”

These reflections were photographed underneath the glass dolphin tanks at the Indianapolis Zoo.  The surface of the water changed continually as the dolphins swam by, creating shimmers in the dappled light of the sun that shone through.  I was with my mother and my two sons, reflecting on how quickly life moves, and how constant was the change.  My mother had Alzheimers for many years, and I was happy to be able to share this experience with her and my boys, taken in by the peacefulness of the ever-changing water above.  Mesmerized by the beauty that was transforming before my eyes minute by minute, I stood, grateful that we could share this experience.

The photograph was printed onto archival paper, layered with beeswax and damar resin, fused between each layer, hand-carved to create rhythm and detail, and colored with powdered pigment to convey my experience of witnessing this saltwater kaleidoscope. It is a wall-hung carving set inside a custom-built frame .
