"Spiral of Life"
Encaustic carving with mixed media, (12 × 16 inch image, 14 × 20 inches framed), wall hung
Materials: beeswax, damar resin, photograph, powdered pigment, wire, birch panel and frame
Wood and its multitude of surface and pattern has always intrigued me. Delving into the swirling pattern of line in brought to mind images of tiny spores leaping out into new life. Created with tiny wires dipped into wax and pigmented as they unfurled upward reminded me of the spiral of life that repeats itself in all levels of life. May it bring a sense of possibility for the new.
Printed onto paper and layered with molten beeswax and damar resin, fused repeatedly between layers, meticulously carved and pigmented end-to-end, tiny wire inclusions were incorporated to create rhythm and depth in this sculptural piece that comes alive off of the wall. This piece was mounted onto birch panel, ready to hang.
