This photograph was taken in a butterfly conservatory that housed a "nursery" where the butterflies could have protected space in which to hold their chrysalises. Watching them in the many stages of development and emergence was nothing short of a sacred experience. We all need safety and community in which to grow and become ourselves as we travel through the many stages of our lives. This small space bursting with new life was a poignant reminder that we can change! The original encaustic mixed media piece was created by layering encaustic medium fused between the many layers onto the photograph and carved and pigmented end-to-end. It was purchased by St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, KY, as part of their Healing Arts Initiative, in which art purchased from local artists is selected for inclusion in the hospital environment. Bringing images that transmit beauty and calm into the space where patients, families, and staff work together for healing provides a sense of respite for weary minds and bodies and hopefully helps restore a bit of energy needed to continue whatever is being faced. Having worked in medical social work for years, I can attest to the need for this healing energy and am honored to be part of this initiative.
