Moved by the many swallowtail wings left behind in a garden, I created a mosaic of their wings and photographed them, intrigued with the intersecting shape and form, color, and line. As I created their composition, I thought of the shared thread of humanity in our world, despite the many differences, and how we must work together to make our world a more healed place. When we draw on each other’s strengths, we become stronger and more beautiful and lessen our isolation.

Macro photography was printed onto archival paper and layered repeatedly with molten encaustic medium, fused between every layer, carved and pigmented end-to-end, and composed onto a carved background that was also layered in beeswax and damar resin that was deeply carved and painted with water-based oil paint. Mounted onto a deep birch panel, these wings are ready for your wall.
